Jeff Morgan’s Channel Shows Muscular Can Equal Healthy
The quest for athletic success often drives those who buy into the myth they need to eat enormous amounts of protein, whether it’s from animal foods or supplements. Jeff Morgan, impressive fitness athlete and star of youtube channel Guilt Free Vegan, explodes that myth with his journey to extraordinary muscle growth and renewed health based on whole plant foods.
Guilt Free Vegan’s videos are fun and inspiring. The episodes range from specific workouts for certain muscle groups to delicious and easy recipes, what Jeff and his kids eat in a typical day, to family fun together. Jeff’s parents even share how their health soared and their meds got left behind after they became plant-based eaters.
Jeff is not a competitive body builder, but sees himself as a muscle building and fitness athlete who combines regular targeted workouts with a whole foods, plant-based diet to achieve his goals. He does not consume protein supplements or animal foods, and eats a wide variety of plant foods.
After enjoying many videos on his channel, I talked with Jeff to find out more about his eating choices, motivation, and success. Jeff’s intense interests in athletics and in the performing arts began when he was twelve. He tried various career paths that best matched these twin goals, and as part of the process moved from California to Israel for a year in his early twenties. He switched home base from Israel to California and back again, then married and settled in Israel the last eight years.
Using frequent, strenuous workouts, Jeff felt healthy until he was in his early thirties. Then, he shared, health issues began nagging him. “I developed skin issues, bloating, constipation, and worsening allergies. When looked in the mirror, I saw someone I didn’t recognize. By my late thirties I was stumped, always looking for the latest superfood fad, like goji berries or coconut oil. I was seeking optimum health and not finding it. My wife was interested in a vegan diet, but I had grown up thinking that animal foods were healthy and necessary, the glory of the meal. Without meat, I was sure that I’d get skinny and lose my muscles. The turning point was when I saw the video Uprooting the Leading Cause of Death, by Dr. Michael Greger. I realized I had been giving too much credit to working out and not enough to eating, and went
totally plant-based overnight. This was in 2014. Since then I’ve realized that, since I’m healthier overall, I can now build muscle better than I did before.”
I asked how the change in diet impacted him and his family. “My wife was thrilled, and she knew with me onboard we could be the healthiest vegan family in the world. All my medical issues and expanding body fat melted away. We transitioned our two sons, then ages two and five, over a period of several months to be sure we were feeding them correctly. Their blood tests were good, and in fact my older son’s anemia went away and he loves our plant-based diet.”
How was his channel named Guilt-Free Vegan? “At first I named it Guilt-Free TV,” Jeff shared. “Eating whole foods, plant-based does the least harm and the most good for all concerned – yourself, the animals, and the planet. You lose all need to justify your choices. Then I realized I wanted videos to cover the totality of a vegan lifestyle, so I renamed it Guilt-Free Vegan. Since I’ve focused on plant-based fitness, the channel has really taken off.”
Vegan Kids Channel
Now Dylan, Jeff’s seven year old son, has his own Vegan Kids channel. Dylan is a natural in front of the camera – charming, engaging, and funny – and loves sharing vegan food and thoughts with kids and adults. This includes his very own healthy vegan cupcake recipe that he prepares himself. My favorite episode is when he shares why he decided to be vegan.
I asked Jeff about his decision to given Dylan his own channel. “At first we were protective, reluctant to expose him to the world of social media likes and dislikes. He really wanted to do it though, so we decided to let him try. We’ll keep it going as long
as he wants to. There is an audience for this- he is promoting health and wellness for kids, not the usual push for candy and toys.”
